Administrative & Motivational Icons — Ajmer, Rajasthan

Dr. Sumit Sharma was born on 21st February 1972 in a small village in Ajmer district, Rajasthan. He belongs to a humble farming family—his father, Shri Surendra Kumar Sharma, was a farmer and his mother a homemaker. Growing up in a rural environment with limited access to electricity, clean water, and education, he developed a strong desire to bring about positive change in society.

An exceptionally bright student, Sumit Sharma topped his district in the 10th standard. Inspired by his science teacher, he began to dream of becoming an IAS officer. He first pursued his passion for medicine, completing his MBBS and later earning an MD in Paediatrics. He served for nearly five years in various government hospitals across Rajasthan, treating children and serving the underprivileged.

Driven by a broader vision for social service, he started preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination while continuing his medical duties. Through determination and hard work, he cracked the exam and became an IAS officer in the 2004 batch.

Throughout his career, he has served in key administrative roles such as SDM in Jodhpur, CEO of Kota Municipal Corporation, Secretary of UIT in Alwar and Bhiwadi, and District Collector of Chittorgarh and Nagaur.

As Collector of Chittorgarh in 2008, he launched the Jan Aushadhi Yojana, ensuring access to affordable generic medicines through government hospitals and cooperative stores. Over 550,000 patients benefited from this initiative, earning him the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration.

Dr. Sumit Sharma’s journey from a remote village to becoming a reform-driven IAS officer is a true story of struggle, service, and social commitment.
